Three Tips to Keep Your Facebook Account Secure
It's no secret that Facebook has a serious problem when it comes to account security. Facebook accounts are getting hacked every day. If your Facebook account does get hacked, you're 100% on your own. Facebook does not provide any type of support, which is unbelievably frustrating; not to mention Facebook does not provide a way for you to contact them either. It seems kind of silly, doesn't it?
"Oh, sorry your Facebook account was hacked. Better luck next time."
As frustrating as Facebook can be when it comes to account security Facebook is a lot like internet. It's almost a necessary evil. Social media has become a part of our every day lives. We almost depend on it.
What's scary is, often times when you get hacked you end up losing access to your Facebook account completely. Hackers have gotten very smart. When a hacker gains access to your Facebook account, you take the risk of them updating your phone number on the account. If this happens, you get stuck in a vicious loop of not being able to reset your password. You cannot get the code to reset your password, which will lock you out completely. Sometimes if you catch it soon enough, you can correct things. However that is not always the case.
It's imperative that you put all security measures in place to help prevent your account from being hacked or compromised. Remember, when you lose your Facebook account, your not just losing friends, your losing pictures, pages you follow, messenger conversations and much more.
Have you ever seen the "Log in with Facebook" button? If you lose your Facebook Account, you lose access to that account as well! This is the same for the "Log in with Google" options as well.
Here are all the security measures you can implement to help protect your account from unauthorized access. First, be sure two-factor authentication is turned on. On your computer, click on your name at the top, then go to settings then privacy, then settings again. Once there find the section " Meta Accounts Center." Click on that, then click on "Password and Security."
Click on two-factor authentication, and follow the prompts. You will need to enter your Facebook password as a security measure in order to continue. Select the "text message option." You will then have a one time code sent to you phone. This is the first security measure you can implement. Moving forward, Facebook may text you to confirm its you, especially if you log into your account from a different location.
Second, go back to the meta accounts center and click on two-factor authentication. From there you can set up the "Authenticator App." This requires you to download some type of authenticator app on your phone. Some are free, and some are paid. I personally use this one. This is a paid app, but you cannot put a price on your security.
Once you have completed this step, follow the on-screen instructions to set things up. Having this type of authentication adds an extra layer of security to your account. You should take the time to set this up on all your accounts as well. Not everyone supports this type of authentication but most do.
Be sure that when you set this feature, you get your recovery codes and put them in a safe place! This will allow you to get back into your account in the event you delete the app of your phone. You can find the recovery codes by clicking on "Additional Methods" in two-factor authentication sections of the Meta accounts center.
Lastly, scroll down and select "security checks" and select "log in alerts." Be sure to turn this on. Facebook will notify you of any log in attempts.
Having all three of these things enabled will help protect your Facebook account. I hope you found this information to be valuable.
