5 Things to consider before you register your domain name.

You may not realize it right away, but registering a domain name is a big deal! Your domain name is one of the first steps to establishing your digital footprint on the web.

Recently, O'Fallon Computers expanded on the services we can offer and domain name registration was one of those services. You can find your perfect domain name here.

In this post I'm going to share five helpful tips you need to take into consideration before registering your first domain name.

Tip #1 - When registering your domain name, do not use any symbols, numbers or any type of punctuation. The goal is to make your domain name memorable. Adding anything more than letters can make your domain hard to remember.

This can also confused new and current customers. Your domain is more important than you may think. It plays a crucial role in aspects of your business.

Tip #2 - Turn on auto renew. This is very important. When you register a domain the typical registration period is year. If your domain does not renew, you could end up paying what's called a redemption fee, or a late fee.

As a result, your email will stop working, and you will have broken links, known as 404 errors. It's good practice to keep auto renew on if it is not already enabled.

Tip #3 - Try to get a .com. In general, people out of habit type a domain.com. Unless you have a big brand, and people know you have a .net or even a .org, try to get a .com. If you cannot get a .com, it will come down to branding and awareness.

Tip #4 - Think about email. When you have a domain you can set your business email. As example, our domain is ofalloncomputers.com and my email is hello@ofalloncomputers.com. Does your email feel right? Does it sound professional? Does it fit your brand? Email is not dead. It stands to be the popular form of communication and it does matter.

Finally, do not be afraid to pay for privacy protection. Having privacy protections keeps your personal information about your domain hidden. There is a really good chance if you register a domain, you will get an email saying some company can help you make your website beautiful, and give you big results with SEO.

If you get the privacy protection, your email is hidden.

Thats it! Thanks for reading.
